Introduction

There are 4 main technologies that enable high speed access to the internet

• Copper (Virgin media) which will be turned off in 2030

• Fiber (Virgin Media & SIRO which is used my multiple providers)

• Satelite broadband 

• 5g wireless 

Overhead cables now & in the future

• Virgin Media  run copper cables between houses in the area which enables there copper network to work and will need to run extra cables between houses for the fiber network

• SIRO is the new fiber network and there fiber cables are run from ESB poles

Key points

• There will be a increase in above ground cables be strung for fiber in the future. From a visual point of view more above ground cables can look unsightly

• Do residents understand there rights regarding cables being connected to there house or being run across the curtilage of there house connecting to an adjacent property 

• Will Virgin Media remove the cabling when the copper network is turned off in 2030.

Tips to increase performance of existing broadband

• Placement of your router or wifi device is import, the best place is the center of the house on the 1st floor landing this is because concrete does a great job in blocking WiFi signals

Most  houses in our estate do not have external ESB meter boxes, thus is this information correct for our area ?
